Art Co-ordinator: Umberto Buttigieg

Umberto Buttigieg (b. 1989, Malta) is an art practitioner and curator and since January 2020, has lead the Mikiel Anton Vassalli Colledge- Malta School of Art as Centre Administrator. In his practice, Buttigieg explores socio-political issues and collective behavioural attitudes. He adopts performance and video art strategies to observe the performing body in ritualistic and repetitive practices and focuses on ways in which human behaviour creates systems of meaning

Buttigieg read for a Masters of Arts in Fine Art (2013) at the University of Brighton and had previously obtained a B.A.(Hons) Degree in History of Art at the University of Malta (2010). During the Masters degree, he focused on Performance and Video Art in his practice, researching on the performing body in Ritualistic Art and repetitive practices. He also completed a number of short curses related to textile design and fashion design at with Central St Martins - London and MCAST - Malta. Besides, Mr Buttigieg is currently reading for another masters degree in Gestalt Psychotherapy, focusing on therapeutic aesthetics and art as a healing modality

Mr Buttigieg has exhibited in numerous collective and collaborative exhibitions both locally and abroad, including London, Brighton, Brussels and Nicosia. He has also curated numerous artistic projects, events and happenings, including exhibitions as part of the VIVA and ZiguZajg Festivals organized by Spazju Kreattiv. He is also a founding member of the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, which strives to raise awareness, appreciation and participation in modern and contemporary art.
